In most of the small- and mid-sized industries, processes are automated by means of industrial PLC. However, critical power assets like circuit breakers, relays, transformers, battery banks and other auxiliary switchgears, etc. are often not automated. All these important assets mostly work offline without getting monitored on a continuous basis and thus we fail to collect important data which could be utilised to maintain and operate the assets more efficiently.
Myths behind this scenario
Myth 1: Substation automation solutions are very costly as they do not justify their cost.
This is a most talked about myth in the industry. Initially, as solutions were designed to cater to mainly the utility sector which works on a very large scale, costs were higher. But now you can get a solution customised to meet the requirement of small- and mid-sized industries. All major OEMs now offer such solutions mostly with the help of their authorised partners/system integrators. Such partners or system integrators are equipped with expert level knowledge and also they have reduced overheads for engineering, manufacturing and services, making solution viable both technically and economically. Also, reachability and service availability has become better.
Myth 2: Substation automation is not necessary for our scale of industry as we can manage manually.
