Cygni offers the most effective rooftop solar solution for residential and commercial workplaces, warehouses, apartments, gas stations, rural banks, etc., Powered by a lithium-ion battery and solar panel.
What are the current market trends influencing the need for battery manufacturing in India?
There are two opportunities in battery manufacturing: one is for electric vehicles (EVs), and the other is for energy storage systems (ESS). Each of them stands alone as a significant portion. The Central FAME-II policy, which provides incentives to the producers of electric vehicles, is the primary demand-side driver for EVs. Additionally, various state-level policies are giving additional incentives on top of the central schemes.
Moreover, the government is aiming for scale through its multiple CESL and EESL projects and obligatory emissions reduction targets. On the supply side, it is driven by low market entry barriers as it is effortless for many OEMs to enter EV and battery manufacturing and a sizeable domestic opportunity.
Additionally, there is a very explicit criterion for localisation, which states that localisation must reach 60 percent within five years and 25 percent during the first two years of operation. The ACC-PLI scheme is expected to result in a direct investment of about `45,000 crores for battery storage manufacturing projects and is expected to result in huge savings in the oil import bill of about s200,000 crores. These schemes will drive the battery manufacturing industry.

What prospects do we see for increasing domestic production and localising energy storage systems like lithium-ion batteries in India?
Ultimately, localisation is going to be crucial. It will take time for lithiumion batteries to reach 100 percent Aatma-Nirbhar, and the evolution will be gradual. Assembling the cathodes, anodes, separators, casing, and terminals into a lithium-ion cell will be the first step in the primary assembly of lithium-ion cells. Additionally, the anode element itself would be manufactured or chemically processed. Due to the abundance of graphite in India, the processing of battery-grade graphite will also take place. Aluminium is similarly widely accessible. So, to rise in the value chain, we could proceed to a graphite or aluminium anode next.
With the government’s drive for solar energy and energy storage, how will the demand for solar and lithium-ion batteries change in the coming years?
The ESS Roadmap India report 2019 to 2032 was published by the India Smart Grid Forum (ISGF) and is a fairly detailed report. It does give details about energy storage opportunities for each one of the key verticals, including Electric Mobility, Telecom Towers, Data Centers, UPS and Inverter back-up, Diesel Generation replacement, Rooftop PV integration with either a medium voltage or a low voltage grid, and energy storage integration in a high voltage grid with utility level grid-energy storage. The energy storage opportunity is estimated to be around 80 gigatonne-hour on the conservative side and 160 gigatonne-hour on the optimistic side. Grid-connected utility storage and then medium-voltage rooftop is expected to add 50 gigawatt-hours. This could be a 200 to 250-gigawatt-hour combined opportunity. Electric and telecom towers represent two significant opportunities for energy storage in addition trooftop PV.
