CMPDIL Invents New Dust Control Technology which will be useful in coal mines, thermal power plants, railway sidings and ports.
Central Mine Planning and Design Institute Limited (CMPDIL), Ranchi (a consultancy subsidiary of Coal India Limited), has developed a “system and method for controlling the generation and movement of fugitive dust” and obtained a patent for it in December 2022. This is carried out to reduce and control fugitive dust in mining areas (Patent No. 416055). When coal or other minerals or fugitive materials are kept outside, such as at mines, thermal power plants, railway sidings, ports, or building sites, this technique can be employed. It will reduce noise in addition to lowering dust production from open sources.

To meet the nation’s energy needs, coal and lignite PSUs under the Ministry of Coal continuously work to produce high-quality coal in an environmentally friendly way. Coal and lignite PSUs are using a variety of measures to avoid or reduce the air pollution carried on by coal mining and related activities. Fugitive dust is a kind of particulate matter that causes air pollution since it is produced by many sources but is released into the atmosphere without passing through a confined flow stream.
In order to reduce the generation and dispersion of fugitive dust, the current invention pertains to the coordinated application of windbreaks (WB) and vertical greenery systems (VGS). With respect to the fugitive dust source(s), the WB and VGS are deployed upwind and downwind, respectively. The WB reduces the wind’s speed as it approaches the source, which lessens the wind’s ability to gather up dust as it blows over the source. By serving as a filter, the VGS lowers the amount of residual dust carried by the wind and directed downwind toward receptors. As a result, at various receptors situated in the downwind direction, there is a significant decrease in the concentration of dust in the ambient air.
