Power ministry suggests adopting efficient power consumption practices for summer
.

In order to guarantee adequate power supply over the next summer months, the Union Electricity Ministry has developed a multifaceted strategy.

Recently, senior officials from the power sector, the ministry of coal, and the ministry of railways met for a review meeting under the leadership of Union Minister for Power & NRE, R.K. Singh. During this meeting, detailed discussions on a number of topics were held in order to address the high demand for electricity in the coming months, particularly between April 23 and May 23.

Alok Kumar, Secretary, Ministry of Power; Ghanshyam Prasad, Chairperson, Central Electricity Authority; S. R. Narsimhan, CMD, Grid Controller of India; Jaya Verma Sinha, Member, Railway Board; Sanjiv Kumar Kassi, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Coal; and Ramesh Babu, Director, Operations, NTPC, among other senior officials from these three ministries, attended the meeting.

The power utilities have been instructed to perform maintenance on coal-based power plants well in advance as part of the strategy, ensuring that no planned maintenance is necessary during the crunch time. All imported coal-based facilities must begin operating at full capacity on March 16, 2023, according to instructions already given under Section 11. In coal-based power facilities, sufficient coal reserves would be made accessible.

The Member Railway Board assured attendees during the meeting that there will be enough rakes available to deliver coal. In order to maintain a sufficient supply of coal at power plants, the Ministry of Railways agreed to deliver 418 rakes to various CIL subsidiaries, GSS and captive blocks, as well as increase the number of rakes in due course.
