India’s nuclear power to source 9 percent of electricity by 2047
.

Dr. Jitendra Singh, the Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology, the Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Earth Sciences, and the Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Personnel, Public Grievances, Pensions, Atomic Energy, and Space, stated today that by the time India celebrates its 100th anniversary of independence in 2047, nearly 9 percent of electricity will likely come from nuclear sources. This will help India move closer to its goal of achieving net-zero target.

After having a review discussion with a group of senior scientists from the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), Department of Atomic Energy, in Mumbai, Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh made these comments.

The Minister stated that among the other goals set by the Department of Atomic Energy is to generate 20 GW of nuclear power by the year 2030, which will be a significant achievement that would make India the third-largest producer of atomic energy in the world, after the United States and France.

The credit for this quick progress, according to Dr. Jitendra Singh, belongs to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who, for the first time since Independence, decided to approve 10 reactors in fleet mode in a single order and allowed nuclear installations to be developed under joint ventures with PSUs. As a result, India is now the second-largest country in the world in terms of the total number of reactors, including those under construction. Atomic energy is being used for the first time in a significant way for applications in many other fields, such as extending the shelf life of agricultural products and fruits like apples and using cutting-edge medical technology to cure cancer and other disorders. It was also claimed that India had demonstrated to the rest of the world how to use nuclear energy for good.
