GMR Smart Electricity Distribution Pvt. Ltd., a subsidiary of GMR Power and Urban Infra Limited (GPUIL), secures a prestigious ₹7,593 crore order to implement a large-scale smart metering project under the RDSS program initiated by the Ministry of Power, Government of India. The project involves 75.69 lakh prepaid smart meters across two discoms, making it the largest combined package order of its kind, aiming to revolutionize the power distribution sector with cutting-edge technology and automation.
GMR Smart Electricity Distribution Pvt. Ltd., a subsidiary of GMR Power and Urban Infra Limited (GPUIL), has achieved a significant milestone by securing a prestigious order worth ₹7,593 crores to execute a large-scale smart metering project under the RDSS program initiated by the Ministry of Power, Government of India. This order is awarded under the DBFOOT (Design, Build, Finance, Own, Operate, and Transfer) model.
The project entails the deployment of 75.69 lakh prepaid smart meters across two discoms, Dakshinanchal Vidyut Vitran Nigam Limited (DVVNL) and Purvanchal Vidyut Vitaran Nigam Limited (PuVVNL). The extensive scope of the project includes design, supply, installation, commissioning, operation, and maintenance of prepaid smart meters infrastructure at both consumer premises and the network level, covering distribution transformers and feeders. The implementation will be supported by advanced technology and software solutions to ensure end-to-end automated system management.
By installing smart meters, the project aims to bring about a transformation in the power distribution sector, reducing billing and collection losses, and enhancing the financial sustainability of the discoms. The project’s reach will extend across 22 districts, encompassing prominent areas such as Varanasi, Prayag Raj, Agra, Mathura, and Aligarh, among others.Srinivas Bommidala, Chairman – Energy, GMR Group, expressed his delight over the wins, highlighting GMR’s commitment to transitioning into green and technology-based energy business with a customer-centric growth strategy. The order marks GMR Group’s entry into the B2C business in the power sector on a substantial scale and is expected to create significant value for GPUIL shareholders.
