Collaborative venture between the two entities is expected to propel advanced green mobility innovations.

Ranchi, Jharkhand – TCPL GES, a fully owned subsidiary of Tata Cummins Private Limited (TCPL), a joint venture between Tata Motors Limited and Cummins Inc. USA, has announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Government of Jharkhand to establish a manufacturing plant for producing low-to-zero-emission mobility solutions. The MoU was signed by Jitendra Kumar, Secretary of the Department of Industries, Government of Jharkhand, and Mr. Ajay Patil, Chief Financial Officer of Cummins Group in India. This event took place in the presence of Hemant Soren, Chief Minister of Jharkhand, Mr. Girish Wagh, Executive Director of Tata Motors, and Mr. Nitin Jirafe, Vice President of Engine Business at Cummins India.

This partnership highlights the State Government’s commitment to India’s Panchamrit Tatva, aimed at addressing climate change. It aligns with the Jharkhand Government’s vision of transitioning towards a low-carbon economy. Jharkhand is poised to become one of the pioneer states in India for manufacturing advanced technology products for the commercial vehicle sector, which will contribute to reducing the nation’s carbon footprint.

TCPL GES will invest over ₹350 Crores over the upcoming years to produce powertrain solutions adaptable to various fuels. These solutions include Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engines, Battery Electric Vehicle Systems, Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle Systems, and Fuel Delivery Systems. This significant investment reflects a commitment to clean energy technologies and supports the Make in India initiative, contributing to self-reliance. The production facility, adhering to the principles of lean, clean, and green manufacturing, is anticipated to commence operations in 2024 in a phased manner. Initial production will focus on the Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engine, followed by Battery Electric Components and Fuel Delivery System related products.

This investment will serve as a pivotal enterprise in fostering a robust supply ecosystem through value chain development. Additionally, it will create employment opportunities for more than 300 skilled youth, driving both technological advancement and socio-economic growth within the state.

BatteryElectric Technology

Cummins Inc. has pioneered new-generation battery pack solutions based on extensive duty cycle and application experience. These batteries will feature an advanced Battery Management System for enhanced monitoring of critical battery parameters and diagnostics, ultimately improving battery life and performance.

Fuel Delivery Systems

The manufacturing of composite tank systems and tailored solutions for hydrogen storage applications will contribute to the acceleration of hydrogen-powered technologies in commercial markets.

Expressing his commitment to sustainable and inclusive state development, Hemant Soren, Chief Minister of Jharkhand, stated, “India is making remarkable progress in combatting climate change. Our collaboration with TCPL GES reflects Jharkhand’s dedication to achieving the country’s net-zero target by 2070 and positioning itself as a hub for cutting-edge technological advancements. This initiative aims to empower our youth with upskilling opportunities in a progressive industry, fostering employment and contributing to the state’s overall growth.

“Speaking on the occasion, Girish Wagh, Executive Director of Tata Motors said, “Since beginning operations in 1945 in Jamshedpur, Tata Motors has established a rich legacy of innovations and industry firsts in its endeavour towards nation building. Today marks another momentous occasion in our partnering with the people and government of Jharkhand for creating future ready sustainable mobility solutions. The state-of-the-art manufacturing facility being set-up will produce hydrogen-based powertrains and battery electric vehicle aggregates and systems using next-gen technologies. These advanced solutions will shape the future of mobility in India by enabling customers to progressively transition to emission free, commercially viable cargo and mass mobility in the coming years.”

Speaking on the occasion, Ajay Patil, CFO, Cummins Group in India said, “With over 30 years of first-hand manufacturing experience in Jamshedpur, we have an intimate understanding of heavy-duty applications and a clear view of the hard work required to transition the commercial vehicle industry to cleaner powertrains. We applaud the Government of Jharkhand for taking bold steps to lead India’s transition to an emission free nation. In line with our Destination Zero strategy, this MoU is a significant milestone on our path to zero emissions, and we are grateful to the Government of Jharkhand for giving us this opportunity to contribute toward lowering emissions today for a better tomorrow.”
