Collaboration to produce green ammonia with renewable energy, bolstering Japan-India ties and global decarbonisation efforts.
JERA Co., Inc. (“JERA”) has announced its agreement with ReNew E-Fuels Private Limited, a subsidiary of ReNew Energy Global PLC (“ReNew”), one of the largest clean energy companies globally, to jointly develop a green ammonia production project.
Under this agreement, JERA and ReNew will undertake the following:
The Government of India has initiated various schemes to support the green hydrogen and ammonia ecosystem under its National Green Hydrogen Mission. With India’s high potential for renewable energy, the nation is poised to become a hub for green hydrogen and ammonia production in Asia. Similarly, the Government of Japan has announced schemes aimed at accelerating the transition to clean energy.
JERA has cultivated a strong relationship with ReNew since 2017. ReNew is actively exploring the development of green fuel projects on a global scale. Leveraging ReNew’s proven capabilities in renewable energy development and solutioning, along with JERA’s expertise in building full value chains, this Project is set to advance both companies’ objectives of achieving Net Zero emissions and promoting green hydrogen, while strengthening the bilateral relationship between Japan and India. In this Project, JERA will expedite the development of renewable energy essential for green hydrogen and ammonia production through JERA Nex, a newly established renewable energy business company by JERA. JERA remains committed to collaborating with leading companies in Japan and overseas to establish and expand hydrogen and ammonia supply chains, thereby contributing to global decarbonisation and addressing energy challenges, particularly in Asia.
Yukio Kani, Global CEO & Chair of JERA said, “Since 2017, JERA has maintained a strong partnership with ReNew, and we are pleased to expand this collaboration to the next level: the first green hydrogen and ammonia development project for JERA. This joint development agreement represents a significant milestone and an exciting advancement moving us one step closer to realising decarbonised society, with a focus on the sustainability, affordability, and stability of future energy.”
Sumant Sinha, Founder, Chairman & CEO, ReNew said, “This collaboration marks an exciting time for both ReNew and JERA and demonstrates our commitment in accelerating the clean energy transition. Green ammonia holds immense potential in reducing carbon emissions and the project, once ready, will contribute to a cleaner future and support India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission.”
