Nuclear power sector to get major boost: Minister
.

Union Minister of State for Atomic Energy Jitendra Singh announced that nine reactors with a total capacity of 7,300 MW are currently under construction, plans underway for twelve reactors.

Ambitious expansion of nuclear reactors are underway in the country. Nine reactors with a total capacity of 7,300 MW are currently under construction and plans for twelve reactors are underway as part of the country’s strategic push to enhance its nuclear capabilities. This was informed by the Minister Jitendra Singh in response to a question in the Lok Sabha on Thursday.

Singh reassured the public regarding the safety standards of these facilities, affirming that “there are no discrepancies in operational safety of nuclear power plants.” He emphasised that these plants are managed by highly trained personnel, and operational safety protocols are subject to regular reviews and enhancements by the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB).

The minister also outlined the extensive measures in place to assess and monitor the health impact of nuclear facilities on local populations. He noted that leading local medical colleges, in collaboration with Tata Memorial Hospital in Mumbai, conduct routine health assessments for residents living near these plants. According to these studies, there has been no adverse effect on the health of surrounding communities due to the operations of the nuclear power plants.

In addition to reactor expansions, Singh highlighted the development of a new Nuclear Fuel Complex (NFC) at Rawatbhata, Kota, Rajasthan. This facility, which includes a PHWR Fuel Fabrication Facility and a Zircaloy Fabrication Facility, aims to produce 500 tonnes of fuel tubes annually. With an investment of Rs 4,256.20 crore, the project, located approximately 50 km from Kota, is nearing completion and represents a significant advancement towards achieving greater nuclear fuel self-sufficiency for India.
