To address rising energy demands in India, ABB drives innovation in UPS and inverter solutions, integrating smart grid compatibility, IoT readiness, and sustainable practices for long-term energy security and electrification. Let us know further details from Ashok Kumar.
How does ABB PowerExchanger enhance energy security in India through grid interaction?
To meet rising energy demands and enhance energy security in India, ABB PowerExchanger is a function available on the MegaFlex DPA family that enables UPS to interact with the grid and supply (upon external request) ancillary grid services. Through this frequency regulation function (FRF), the UPS can reduce/increase the input power flowing from the grid to the UPS or even reverse the flow and inject power back into the grid (known as back-feed) while maintaining constant output power.
A variety of energy backup options deliver the flexibility that users seek. Our Modular DPA (Decentralised Parallel Architecture) family UPS systems can be installed with module-specific backup energy media for the highest availability or a common battery for the whole UPS rack to optimise cost.
How does the ANC Network Card enhance UPS monitoring and cyber security?
At ABB, we believe it is essential that one has access to real-time UPS status data to help ensure that the UPS, which is responsible for keeping any critical application running, is working effectively. Equally, UPS equipment is sometimes installed in remote or secure rooms, making access for personnel either inconvenient or undesirable. These two issues, amongst others, are resolved by the ABB with the ANC Network Card, which is designed to meet the highest cyber security standards; the card guarantees maximum robustness against cyber-attacks.
Measurements and alarms are also made accessible to other integrated systems, including the electrical power monitoring system (EPMS), the building management system (BMS) and data centre infrastructure management (DCIM). An integrated agent enables direct plug-and-play communication via ABB Ability SmartTracker, the remote monitoring and diagnostics platform for UPS systems. How is ABB addressing the need for continuous training in clean energy technologies?
The surge in investments within the power sector is a significant driver of innovation, underscoring the necessity for a skilled workforce. With global investment in clean energy technology and infrastructure set to hit $2 trillion this year, according to IEA, the demand for advanced technologies in electrification is growing. This trend highlights the need for continuous training programmes to equip employees with skills relevant to new technologies, including renewable energy systems and smart grid solutions. A skilled workforce is essential for implementing these innovations and ensuring safety and sustainability across operations.
At ABB, we have established customer feedback channels, allowing us to refine products based on user experiences and technological advancements continually. We also implement agile methodologies to help us quickly adapt to market changes and emerging technologies.
How does your company ensure efficient lifecycle management of its sustainable energy solutions?
ABB plays a significant role in supporting the balanced energy mix by focusing on electrification and renewable energy. This contributes to long-term energy security, emphasising electrification as a pathway to reduce carbon emissions. Through this, we support sectors such as transportation and industrial processes in transitioning from fossil fuels to electric power. Electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure promotes the adoption of electric transportation, further integrating renewable energy into the mobility sector.
We are dedicated to sustainable practices across our operations and solutions. This includes minimising environmental impact and supporting our customers in achieving their sustainability goals while emphasising the lifecycle management of products and systems, ensuring they are efficient, maintainable, and environmentally friendly from production to disposal.
