Discussing the increasing investments and the required employment opportunities in the renewable energy sector, Pradip Kumar Das, Chairman & Managing Director (CMD), Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency Limited (IREDA), emphasised that massive job creation has occurred in recent years as a result of massive investments in the RE sector. The renewable energy sector in India could potentially employ around 10 lakh people by 2030, which would be ten times the current workforce of an estimated 1.1 lakh people. More than 90% of RE projects have been developed in rural areas, which has resulted in a positive development for the rural economy.
Discussing further, he emphasised the importance of enhancing cooperative groups’ capabilities to understand the effects of climate change and environmental degradation, as well as their ability to play an important role in greening India through renewable energy. He also emphasised IREDA’s numerous initiatives to boost the waste-to-energy sector. IREDA has increased the exposure limit for MSW-based Waste to Energy projects to 70 per cent of the project cost. For projects confirming interest in subvention and directly attached to the sugar mill/factory for raw material, the company has set an exposure limit of up to 90 per cent of the project cost for ethanol production.
