A major focus is shifting coal transport from 64 percent to 75 percent by rail by FY 2030. This effort is geared towards achieving the coal production target of Vision 2030 and Viksit Bharat 2047.
The Ministry of Coal has announced a comprehensive strategy aimed at fast-tracking the development of critical logistics projects. This initiative is in alignment with the vision for “integrated planning & synchronised time-bound implementation,” which is pivotal to achieving the ambitious goal of Viksit Bharat 2047.
Recognising the vital role of coal in India’s energy landscape, the Ministry is committed to reducing logistics constraints that currently hinder efficient coal transportation. To this end, the Ministry is working closely with the Ministry of Railways, State Governments and various agencies to address and resolve issues that affect the timely progress of infrastructure projects. This collaborative approach is expected to streamline processes and foster a more conducive environment for development.
Coal evacuation infrastructure projects aim to achieve several key objectives. First, they seek to ensure the availability of adequate coal loading and evacuation facilities. By optimising the total logistics cost, these projects focus on rationalising the network to improve loading and transportation efficiency. Modernisation is another crucial goal, which involves incorporating advanced technologies such as AI, drones, and sensors to enhance infrastructure and innovation. Integration of a multimodal network is promoted to support interconnected systems and greener transportation methods. The projects also strive to improve the efficiency of logistics and transportation systems, ensuring timely and cost-effective coal movement from production sites to consumers. Additionally, inclusivity is emphasised by addressing the needs of all stakeholders involved in the process.Key initiatives for coal evacuation infrastructure focus on several strategic goals. To support the ambitious target of producing 1.5 billion tonnes of coal by FY30, there is a strong emphasis on ensuring that infrastructure development keeps pace with production increases. A significant initiative is a modal shift to rail transport, aimed at increasing the rail share for coal from 64 percent to 75 percent by FY 2030. This shift will help reduce road congestion and enhance environmental sustainability. The Ministry has identified 38 priority rail projects, which will be expedited in collaboration with the Ministry of Railways to improve rail connectivity and ensure timely coal supply to power plants and industries. Additionally, larger coal mines producing more than 2 million tonnes per annum will be mandated to implement mechanised coal handling facilities within the next five years, enhancing operational efficiency, and safety, and reducing environmental impact. Integrated infrastructure development will be supported through the PM Gati Shakti initiative, promoting multi-modal connectivity and coordinated efforts across ministries for seamless coal evacuation.
The Ministry of Coal is committed to transforming India’s coal sector through strategic planning and execution. By accelerating infrastructure development and fostering collaboration among stakeholders, the Ministry aims to enhance India’s position as a leader in sustainable coal production and logistics. This effort is geared towards creating a robust and efficient coal sector that contributes to a prosperous and developed nation by 2047.
