Transformers enable 20 percent speed boost, signify innovation and commitment to modernise Indian rail infrastructure.

Hitachi Energy, a global leader in energy solutions, has achieved a significant milestone in its commitment to Indian Railways. Renowned for its cutting-edge technology, the company has designed and manufactured India’s highest power-rated Scott transformers of 100 MVA at its Maneja facility in Vadodara. This marks a noteworthy accomplishment as these transformers are the first of their kind within the Hitachi Energy group worldwide.

Under a comprehensive agreement with M/s BNC Power Projects Ltd, Hitachi Energy India Limited will supply 14 high-rating transformers to enhance the infrastructure of Indian Railways. This comprises 12 units of 100 MVA 132/2x55kV Scott-connected transformers and 2 units of 100 MVA 220/2x55kV Scott-connected transformers.

The flag-off event for the first unit of the 132KV Scott Transformer was held today, graced by esteemed guests including N Venu, MD & CEO, India & South Asia, Hitachi Energy; Bruno Melles, MD, Business Unit – Transformers; Carlos Pettinau, Hub APMEA Manager – Transformers, all from Hitachi Energy; and Atul Pandit, SVP, Transformers – India, Hitachi Energy. Dignitaries from Indian Railways—Bhardwaj Chaudhary, Deepak Tripathi, PB Gadre, Sharad Gautam—and representatives from BNC Power Project Limited—Yashodhan Chaudhary, Amit Jain, Umnesh Munde, D.K Srivastava—also attended the ceremony.

Product certification was obtained from the Rating & Design Standard Organisation (RDSO), the Indian Railways technical body, following the successful completion of all mandatory tests. The first unit of the transformer successfully completed the dynamic short circuit test (prototype test) at the Central Power Research Institute (CPRI) in Bengaluru, along with all other factory acceptance tests.

These Scott connected transformers play a pivotal role in upgrading India’s rail infrastructure, enabling trains to achieve speeds of up to 160km/h, a 20 percent increase from the current maximum speed of 130km/h. This upgrade will enhance the reliability of passenger trains and elevate the train speed from the existing top speed, marking the first step towards widespread usage of Scott transformers by Indian Railways in its passenger rail network.

Hitachi Energy’s Made in India Scott Transformers exemplify the commitment and innovation the company brings to Indian Railways, furthering the country’s journey towards a modern, efficient, and sustainable transportation network.
