Conceived and conceptualised by NETRA (NTPC Energy Technology Research Alliance), the R&D arm of NTPC Limited, this innovative Vindhyachal Thermal Power plant captures CO2 directly from the flue gas emissions and converts it into methanol, a versatile and cleaner fuel which can be further used for applications like power generation and transportation.
In a groundbreaking development, Jakson Green Private Limited has successfully synthesised methanol from captured carbon dioxide (CO2) at NTPC’s Vindhyachal Thermal Power Plant. This innovative project, conceived and conceptualised by NTPC Energy Technology Research Alliance (NETRA), the R&D arm of NTPC Limited, represents a significant advancement in carbon capture and utilisation technology.
The state-of-the-art facility captures CO2 directly from flue gas emissions and converts it into methanol—a cleaner and versatile fuel with applications in power generation, transportation, and other sectors. This achievement is a first for India in producing methanol from captured carbon and marks a major milestone in the country’s green energy transition.
Upon successfully producing the first few drops of methanol, E.K.S Sreekumar, Head ofJakson Green Private Limited, Strategy atstated, “As the EPC contractor, we are honoured to have led the engineering, procurement, and construction of this landmark project on turnkey basis in partnership with NTPC & their technology provider. This first-of-its-kind endeavour has provided invaluable learning experiences for our team, empowering us to tackle future challenges and deliver innovative solutions in such upcoming projects”.The project sets a global benchmark in carbon capture and utilisation, showcasing India’s potential in pioneering sustainable energy solutions. Jakson Green is actively driving the transformation of the energy sector, with six marquee Power-to-X projects in its portfolio. These include India’s first green hydrogen refueling station for urban mobility and the world’s first CO2-to-4G ethanol plant, both for NTPC.
This achievement reinforces the collaboration between Jakson Green and NTPC on groundbreaking initiatives, laying the foundation for a sustainable and environmentally responsible future. The success of the methanol synthesis plant is expected to inspire further advancements in green technology and support India’s vision for a low-carbon economy.
