Leading Beneficiaries and Advanced Chemistry Cell Technology Propel India’s Electric Mobility and Self-Reliance Vision.
The Ministry of Heavy Industries has awarded the construction of a 30GWh capacity to three beneficiaries: Ola Cell Technologies Pvt. Ltd., ACC Energy Storage Pvt Ltd., and Reliance New Energy Battery Storage Ltd. They are also in the process of awarding an additional 20GWh capacity, with the goal of achieving a total production capacity of 50GWh by 2030. To oversee the progress of the selected beneficiaries’ work, the Ministry has designated Engineers India Limited as Independent Engineers. Prototype testing by these beneficiaries is nearly complete, and commercial production is expected to commence gradually in phases during the fiscal year 2024.
In alignment with the scheme’s vision of promoting domestic value addition, all three beneficiaries are actively developing the technology for Advanced Chemistry Cells, which is currently in advanced stages of development. The cumulative investment made by these beneficiary organizations has now reached ₹2090 Crore. Ola Cell Technologies is establishing its manufacturing facility in Krishnagiri, Tamil Nadu; ACC Energy Storage is setting up its facility in Dharwad, Karnataka; and Reliance New Energy Battery Storage is establishing a facility in Jamnagar, Gujarat. These endeavors are creating employment opportunities for local residents. It’s worth noting that Reliance New Energy Limited has also acquired three overseas companies engaged in ACC manufacturing business. With the objective of promoting the “Make in India” and “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” initiatives, the Ministry of Heavy Industries introduced the Production Linked Incentive scheme for Advanced Chemistry Cell Battery Storage in June 2021. This initiative is designed to support the establishment of Giga-scale ACC manufacturing facilities in India, with a budgetary allocation of ₹18,100 Crore. The scheme’s primary aim is to bolster the ecosystem for Electric Mobility and Battery Storage within the country, contributing to the larger “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” self-reliance initiative.
