First-of-its-kind project to enhance power supply and spur socio-economic development in eastern India.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will dedicate Unit-1 of the North Karanpura Super Thermal Power Project (NKSTPP) to the nation. Situated in the Chatra district of Jharkhand, this project, established with an investment of ₹ 7526 crore, marks a significant milestone in India’s power infrastructure. The NKSTPP boasts a total envisaged capacity of 1980 MW, comprising three units of 660 MW each. Notably, it stands as the country’s inaugural Supercritical Thermal Power Project incorporating an Air Cooled Condenser (ACC) of such substantial magnitude. This technology innovation significantly reduces water consumption to one-third compared to conventional Water-Cooled Condensers.
Primarily catering to the eastern region of India, including Jharkhand, Bihar, Odisha, and West Bengal, the pit-head project aims to ensure the continuous availability of quality power at an affordable cost, bolstering the 24×7 power supply scenario in the area. The commencement of this endeavor was initiated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and now, with Unit #01’s dedication, its fruition is celebrated.
Beyond its power generation capabilities, the NKSTPP contributes to the socio-economic landscape of the region. It generates both direct and indirect employment opportunities, while also spearheading various community development initiatives. These initiatives span across crucial sectors such as education, drinking water provision, sanitation, healthcare, and women’s empowerment, fostering holistic development in the vicinity. Moreover, the project’s impact extends beyond its immediate vicinity. It has played a pivotal role in enhancing both physical and social infrastructure in nearby areas. This includes the development of essential amenities such as approach roads, drainage systems, communication networks, and transportation facilities. Furthermore, there has been notable improvement in social infrastructure, particularly in education and healthcare systems, thus uplifting the overall quality of life for the communities surrounding the project site.
The North Karanpura Super Thermal Power Project not only signifies a landmark achievement in India’s power sector but also stands as a beacon of progress and development, enriching the lives of those it serves while setting a precedent for sustainable and inclusive growth.
