In a recent report by the Central Electricity Authority, Uttar Pradesh has emerged as the frontrunner among Indian states in terms of the addition of transmission lines by state transmission utilities in the fiscal year 2024.
According to the CEA findings, Uttar Pradesh Power Transmission Corporation Ltd. (UPPTCL) surpassed other state utilities by a significant margin, having added 1,460 circuit kilometres (ckm) of transmission lines rated at 220 kV or higher during FY24. This achievement underscores Uttar Pradesh’s commitment to bolstering its power infrastructure.
Following Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat Energy Transmission Corporation Ltd. (GETCO) secured the second position with 898 ckm of additions by the end of the fiscal year. However, UPPTCL’s contribution to the overall increase from the state sector was notable, accounting for slightly more than 20%. Gujarat followed with a share of 13% in this growth, with Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Bihar trailing behind.
The Central Electricity Authority (CEA), an organisation tasked with formulating the National Electricity Plan every five years to optimise power generation resources, provided these insights. Working under the Ministry of Power and headquartered in New Delhi, the CEA plays a pivotal role in shaping India’s energy landscape.Established on January 14, 2000, Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL) serves as the backbone of the state’s power sector. It was formed as part of power sector reforms and restructuring in Uttar Pradesh, aimed at efficient planning, management, transmission, distribution, and supply of electricity. UPPCL stands as a professionally managed utility dedicated to delivering reliable and cost-efficient electricity to every citizen of the state.
