Mobil DTETM Oil Medium’s high oxidation stability and resistance to varnish formation, combined with MSLA’s superior servicing, assisted KPTL in achieving more than 13 years of turbine life.
India is the world’s third-largest producer and second-largest consumer of electricity. With an installed power capacity of 402.8 GW, as of May 2022, the power sector has been expanding and increasing production to accommodate the steep rise in the economy’s demands. To keep up with the growing demand, the power sector relies on a network of heavy-duty machinery and complex equipment—which in turn, depends on quality industrial lubricants that enable smooth operations without unexpected delays, unwanted expenditures on maintenance, and loss of crucial man-machine hours.
Power operators across the country are aided by leading industrial providers like MobilTM Lubricants, who have been playing a crucial role in optimising profitability and productivity. Through such collaborations, Mobil has been pioneering, practical solutions to pressing equipment challenges—helping businesses maximise their performance and increase productivity.
Optimised performance with energy efficiency
Kalpataru Power Transmission Limited (KPTL) is a leading engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) company. The company installed a Shin Nippon steam turbine in 2003, which was lubricated by Mobil DTETM Oil Medium turbine oil that enabled low maintenance and efficient operations. This particular lubrication solution is a part of the Mobil DTE™ Oil Named Series Oils, which include high-quality, rust-and oxidation-inhibited circulating lubricants. They are used widely in steam and hydro turbines and all other continuous circulation methods involving pumps, valves, and ancillary equipment.
To complement this refined oil, Mobil recommended the Mobil ServSM Lubricant Analysis (MSLA) program for condition monitoring and oil analysis to KPTL. This recommendation was made to enhance the productivity of the turbine. At KPTL’s Sriganganagar plant, regular oil samples were tested for equipment component health analysis and turbine oil suitability assessment. The lubricants and services provided by Mobil resulted in a positive change for the plant. The high oxidation stability and resistance to varnish formation provided by Mobil DTE Oil Medium, combined with the superior servicing of MSLA, helped KPTL achieve a turbine life greater than 13 years. Furthermore, only 1,400 litres of oil were required for 1,14,300 hours of power generation, resulting in a US $ 12,252 annual savings.Services that guarantee satisfaction
Lubricants enhance energy savings by directly reducing electrical energy consumption or lowering friction and operating temperatures. Alongside this, integrating best-in-class services with premium lubricants provides an additional edge for businesses to meet their productivity and profitability goals. With the rise of digitalisation, Mobil has been working towards enhancing services through web-based provisions like the MSLA that bridge the gap between the real and virtual worlds. The extensive range of expert technical assistance under the MSLA is designed to help businesses optimise their equipment maintenance programs and machine availability to achieve safety, environmental care, and productivity goals.
Technological advancements like artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML) have become an integral part of the industrial sector. AI/ ML has the potential to cut energy waste, lower energy costs, and substantially reduce man-machine interaction to make processes accessible and easy to operate. Power companies have been integrating these technological advancements into various processes. Machine learning allows machines to learn independently, concluding their experiences for future operational efficiencies, solving problems and reducing operations and maintenance downtime and costs. Mobil has been at the forefront of the country’s industrial growth through its products and services. It has emerged as a trusted partner in proactively pursuing innovation to help the power sector play its decisive role in powering India’s economic transformation.
