SCADA technology and the challenges and necessity of smart power systems for smart cities. Excerpts from the submission during the EPR Magazine Power talk on Powering smart cities with green energy
Although the complexity of the power grid will increase due to increased demand, we will have a higher power system capacity because of the availability of sustainable technologies. The grid for the smart city will become more scalable, reliable, and robust because of the system’s use of sustainable energy, sustainable goods, and digitalisation. Future power systems will likely include cities due to urban areas becoming more and more power-intensive consumers and producers of power. We will be considered producers in the sense of both creating and consuming energy, regardless of whether we are cities or individual consumers.
To integrate various types of assets, energies, and ecosystems in the process, the power systems of smart cities must be durable, versatile, and connected. Digitalisation will undoubtedly assist with this, but ultimately, the availability, dependability, and affordability of electricity need to be addressed, which needs to be done flexibly. We need greater automation, more digitisation, and real-time control protection. We also need to go toward autonomous security to create, store efficiently and use renewable energy under control.
Three sectors will provide us with, for example, sustainability in smart cities and energy-efficient systems, which many OEMs offer. Since this traditional rotating machine will use less and less solar power, we at Schneider make equipment, devices, products, and solutions more sustainable by using sustainable materials and addressing the sustainability of these products in the lifecycle of power electronics-based control.
