Reports indicate that India’s renewable energy capacity is expected to grow in 2021 and 2022. According to MNRE’s monthly report, India’s cumulative installed RE capacity reached 94.43 GW as of March 31, 2021. This includes 40.09 GW of solar capacity and 39.24 GW of wind capacity, and then 10.31 GW of bio-power and 4.79 GW of small hydro capacity. Government plans to add 175 GW of renewable energy by 2022, which includes 100 GW of solar and 60 GW of wind energy. Another industry report indicates that India is expected to add nearly 20.2 GW of new wind power capacity between 2021-2025. This would increase the country’s 39.2 GW wind market by nearly 50 percent and is a clear signal that the market is beginning to bounce back after a slowdown in recent years. While these numbers open up new avenues of growth for renewable energy in India, the journey ahead could see many opportunities associated with some challenges as well.
